Semaglutide for Weight Loss

On June 4, 2021, the FDA approved a new drug for weight loss and weight management by Novo Nordisk. “Wegovy” (trade name) is Semaglutide (generic name), a Glucagon-like peptide 1 agonist. GLP-1 is one of a group of gut hormones that have recently been studied for their effects on digestion, metabolism, and the brain. This particular gut hormone triggers the pancreas to produce insulin in response to eating, however it also signals the brain to tell you to STOP eating causing satiety, and slows gastric emptying, adding to the feeling of fullness. As opposed to the common appetite suppressant, Phentermine, Semaglutide has no known heart rate, blood pressure or insomnia side effects. Semaglutide has been on the market for several years as the drug Ozempic for improved A1C in type 2 diabetics. Wegovy is actually a different dose of Semaglutide that was found to cause significant weight loss when used as a once/ weekly injection. The most common side effects of Semaglutide are nausea/vomiting, fatigue, constipation/diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These side effects are usually mild, and resolve early in the course of treatment. In rare cases, pancreatitis may occur and a possible increase in some thyroid tumors (found only in lab animals to date). Type 1 diabetics are also not candidates for Semaglutide.

There are 3 main limiting factors with Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy. First is the lack of exposure given to medical doctors regarding this drug, which limits how many patients actually receive a prescription for it. Second is the price tag of around $1400.00/month. Third is the lack of insurance providers willing to cover this, as Wegovy was labelled a “lifestyle” drug. In spite of these draw backs, Wegovy has become so popular that the manufacturer is having difficulty keeping up with demand.

Fortunately, we have access to Semaglutide provided to us through American certified compounding pharmacies that specialize in injectable medications and supplements.
As with all weight loss medications, Semaglutide works best when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and activity. However, there is no specific diet or calorie restriction. This makes it easier to fit into our busy lifestyle and travel. Results have been shown to be best when coordinated with coaching and follow-up.
